Full Endowment and Renaming of Dallas Top 100 Scholarship

Linda and Lon Young Scholarship (left to right) Cliff Vannoy, Executive Vice President, LSU Alumni Association; Linda & Ron Young, Scholarship Honorees: Stacey Little, Immediate Past President, Dallas LSU Alumni Association Chapter.

On Wednesday, July 11th, approximately 50 alumni members including Board of Directors (past and present), supporters of LSU, family members and administrators from LSU as well as the LSU Alumni Association met at the Edgemere Apartments for a surprise banquet honoring Linda & Ron Young with the renaming of our Dallas Top 100 Scholarship to the Ron & Linda Young Dallas Alumni Chapter Endowed Top 100 Scholarship.

As our longtime Chair of High School Relations, Linda has been instrumental in creating one of the most successful recruitment territories for LSU outside the state of Louisiana. As she entered the chambers fully unaware of what was to transpose, the expression on her face was, in the words of MasterCard...priceless!

Making the evening more enjoyable was the surprise appearance of her son, Chris, from Baton Rouge and the presence of the honorees of our 2 other scholarships, Dr. William Knight and Col. Fred Burley, who also hosted our banquet. Among the many accolades were those from Baton Rouge who had seen Linda's tireless devotion to details and follow up in all that they were involved with together.

After Cliff Vannoy, Executive Vice President of the LSU Alumni Association was given the check for $9750 to complete the endowment of our Top 100 Scholarship to $40,000, Linda and Ron were presented with a citation honoring their moment. Stacey Little, Immediate Past President of our Dallas Chapter, also presented Linda with an LSU bracelet that had an engraved charm commemorating the event and date.

In the last 2 years, our chapter has contributed $43,750 towards scholarships either through the LSU Foundation or LSU Alumni Association. The Top 100 Scholarship is now fully funded at $40,000 and attention is now directed to the Burley Scholarship.

The Burley Scholarship at the LSU Foundation currently has $27,000 and will be fully funded at $40,000. With $13,000 remaining to fully endow this scholarship, it will be our primary focus in this fiscal year. The Dr. Knight Chancellor's Leadership Scholarship is currently fully funded at $20,000.

Member participation at Crawfish Boil Fund Raisers, Silent Auction, renewal of annual dues, and scholarship contributions have all contributed to our success in doubling the value of our scholarships in the last 3 years and making a greater impact in the lives of DFW students enjoying the experience of LSU. As a member you should be proud!

Alumni Association Hosts Incoming Freshmen Students at Send off Party

For the 18th year in a row, our Dallas chapter of LSU alumni hosted a "summer send-off" party for all the new DFW area freshmen who will be attending LSU this fall. Approximately 70 students, parents, and LSU alumni gathered on the evening of July 26 at the Edgemere Apartments to get acquainted and feast on cajun favorites of red beans, gumbo, and crawfish bisque along with some yummy brownies and cookies.

This year's class has just under 100 students (TWICE AS MANY AS LAST YEAR!!) with nearly 60% of them having some type of scholarship. We're recruiting GREAT students again this year, and as always, parents and students alike enjoyed getting together before they head down to Tiger Country.
